Questions
Frequently asked questions
What is color blindness?
Color blindness (color vision deficiency) is a reduced ability to distinguish certain colors, most often red and green, almost always caused by inherited differences in the retina's color-sensing cells. It ranges from mild to severe and, much more rarely, can affect blue-yellow perception or all color perception.
Do color blind glasses cure color blindness?
No — color-enhancing glasses don't cure color blindness; they use tinted filters to make some colors easier to tell apart, and how well that works varies a lot by the type and severity of color blindness a person has.
What's the difference between protan, deutan and tritan color blindness?
Protan and deutan are both forms of red-green color blindness (protan affects red sensitivity, deutan affects green, and deutan is the most common form overall), while tritan color blindness affects blue-yellow perception and is much rarer.
Can color blindness be tested online?
An online color blind test can be a useful first screen, but it can't replace an in-person exam with a licensed eye doctor using controlled lighting and standardized tools like Ishihara plates or the Farnsworth D-15 test.
Can I become color blind as an adult?
Yes — while most color blindness is inherited and present from birth, some cases are acquired later in life from conditions like diabetes, certain medications, aging or eye disease, and a sudden change in color vision should be evaluated by an eye doctor rather than assumed.
Does color blindness disqualify you from certain jobs?
It depends on the job and the testing standard used — careers like piloting, some military roles, electrical work, and certain law enforcement or maritime positions set their own color vision requirements, so confirm the current standard with the employer or licensing body and get tested by a provider who can issue the right documentation.
Will my child's color blindness get worse?
Inherited color blindness in children is present from birth and typically stays about the same throughout life — it doesn't usually get worse over time, though it's worth confirming the type and severity and asking about school accommodations.
